‘Ready Before the Storm’ seminar teaches residents how to prepare for severe weather
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – Community members in Bowling Green gathered Tuesday at the WKU Innovation Campus to learn how to better prepare for severe weather during a “Ready Before the Storm” seminar.
The event brought together local partners including the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and CREATE to focus on emergency preparedness and disaster resilience.
Organizers said the training aimed to equip residents with practical knowledge on how to handle a variety of emergencies, including tornadoes, fires and winter weather. Attendees also received supplies such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and weather radios to help them stay prepared at home.
Matt Sheffield, chief development officer with Habitat for Humanity in Bowling Green, said preparation ahead of time is key to staying safe when severe weather hits.
“A lot of times, we aren’t prepared because we didn’t get prepared when it’s sunny,” Sheffield said. “So this is about being prepared when it’s sunny for when it’s not.”
The seminar was open to the public, with organizers emphasizing that preparedness is something everyone in the community should prioritize. They also expressed interest in offering similar trainings on a regular basis in the future.
During the event, participants were encouraged to take additional steps to stay informed, including downloading the Red Cross Emergency App, which provides real-time alerts and safety information and is available on both the App Store and Google Play.
