Police: 17-year-old charged with murder in MTSU shooting, victim identified

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.  – Murfreesboro Police Department stated a 17-year-old has been identified and charged in a recent graduation shooting.

Police stated that the 17-year-old was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting that took place after a Riverdale High School graduation at Middle Tennessee State University Wednesday, May 18.

According to police, Clarksville Police Department officers placed him in custody around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The dead victim has been identified as 18-year-old Hasani Brewer.

The name of the other victim, a 17-year-old, has not been released. Police stated he is in stable condition.

Officials stated that an investigation showed that Brewer and the 17-year-old victim got into an altercation, which ended up taking place at the tennis court on the MTSU campus next to the Murphy Center. The shooter began firing at this location, killing Brewer and injuring the 17-year-old.

The shooting took place as people were leaving the graduation.

“This was not a random shooting,” said Public Information Officer Larry Flowers. “The two victims and the shooter knew each other.”

Charges may be pending for other individuals.

“This is a senseless act of violence that never should have occurred,” said Flowers. “We ask the public to join us in sending prayers to the families during this tragic and difficult time.”

The investigation remains active.


MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Murfreesboro Police Department stated that one person has died and another is injured following a shooting Wednesday night on campus at MTSU.

Police stated a person of interest has been identified in the shooting that followed Riverdale High School’s graduation hosted at MTSU. Detectives are in the process of locating him, according to police.

On Wednesday, May 18 around 8:51 p.m., Murfreesboro Police Department officers and MTSU Police responded to the MTSU campus and found two people suffering from gunshot wounds near the tennis court next to the Murphy Center, stated police.

Officials stated one victim was pronounced dead and the other was injured in critical but stable condition.

MPD Criminal Investigation Division is working closely with Middle Tennessee State University Police, Rutherford County Sheriff Office and Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Police stated, “Tonight’s shooting at Middle Tennessee State University is a tragedy for our community. We mourned with the family who lost a loved one and the victim who was injured.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
