Nurse spreads training awareness during Sexual Assault Awareness Month

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and one local nurse is spreading important information to others in the medical profession.

Melissa Gilpin is a sexual assault nurse examiner. She travels across the state speaking about Sexual Assault Awareness and the importance of this type of nursing, called ‘SANE’.

A ‘SANE’ is a registered nurse who has completed additional education and training to provide comprehensive health care to sexual assault survivors.

Just this year, she began teaching classes in Bowling Green to get more nurses SANE certified.

“Few survivors of sexual violence actually come forward and report, there ae so many difficult things about this. So when they do show up at a hospital, you want the people at the hospital to feel comfortable in the knowledge they provide and the care that they need. Not just the physical care but make sure they can be connected with the other resources they’ll need for the healing process,” said Gilpin.
