Local woman’s car struck by lightning

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – On the way to school one morning, a Cave City woman and her granddaughter had to make an unpleasant stop in a thunder storm.

Michelle Meredith’s car was struck on I-65 by lightning, prompting the Cave City Fire Department to respond when the vehicle, of course, became unsafe to use and the engine destroyed.

News 40 spoke to Shane Holinde, a meteorologist with the Kentucky Mesonet, concerning the issue. Holinde said the chances of getting struck by lightning are already one in a million but in the car, almost double, adding the fact that lightning looks for the shortest path by being attracted to things much taller.

Because of the outer body of metal around them, the two were safe within the vehicle.
