Keeping pets away from Halloween candy
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Halloween candy can be dangerous for pets, so remember to put the sweets in a place where your furbabies cannot get ahold of it.
Animals are curious little creatures, and they likely will be interested in that bucket full of new, exciting smells that your child brings home after a successful candy haul.
Mr. Kitty might just try to jump up onto the counter where you set it and sneak himself a little snack.
Dogs and cats should be monitored closely around chocolate or any candy that may contain artificial sweeteners like Xylitol, as both of these are extremely toxic to pets.
“It is toxic to dogs and cats and at high levels it can be fatal. So if a dog or your cat were to get into chocolate, that would be an immediate rush to the vet. Don’t wait. Don’t hesitate. Don’t see if they’re going to be okay. That’s something you’ve got to go right away,” said Sarah Wilde, a surgery tech at the Bowling Green/Warren County Humane Society.
If the children are going to be laying their haul out on the floor to trade or have parents check it before eating, you can crate your pets or put them in the yard so there is no risk to your furry family member.
