Teen routs American, advances

NEW YORK (AP) — Emma Raducanu has gone all the way from the U.S. Open qualifying rounds to the quarterfinals.

The 18-year-old from Britain routed American Shelby Rogers 6-2, 6-1 to join fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez in the women’s last eight. Raducanu reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and has gone a step further in the year’s last Grand Slam tournament. She became just the third female qualifier to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals in the professional era

In other matches:

— Alexander Zverev is into the U.S. Open quarterfinals with his 15th straight victory. The No. 4 seed from Germany beat 13th-seeded Jannik Sinner 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7).Zverev started his winning streak at the Olympics, where he beat top-ranked Novak Djokovic in the semifinals en route to the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Belinda Bencic is back into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. The Olympic gold medalist from Switzerland beat Iga Swiatek 7-6 (12), 6-3 to make the last eight in Flushing Meadows for the third time.

The 11th-seeded Bencic pulled out the lengthy first-set tiebreaker, then took the second set in 43 minutes — only about 20 more than the tiebreaker lasted. Bencic was a semifinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019, the last time she played. She also reached the quarterfinals in her debut in 2014.

Europe retains Solheim Cup with 2nd-ever win on US soil

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Europe has retained the Solheim Cup. The defending champions earned a second straight victory over the United States when Matilda Castren closed out Lizette Salas 1 up to give the visitors the decisive point in a 15-13 victory.

Leona Maguire set the tone for Europe in singles. She finished off an unbeaten weekend when she beat Jennifer Kupcho 5-and-4 to put the wheels in motion for a victory by the visitors. The win is just the second ever for Europe in the U.S. The Europeans blew out the Americans 18-10 in Colorado in 2013.

Guerrero launches 40th homer

UNDATED (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 40th homer, Marcus Semien went deep twice and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 8-0 for their fifth straight win.

Hyun Jin Ryu pitched six effective innings as the Blue Jays won for the eighth time in nine games. Toronto also improved to 5-2 in the Bronx this year. Guerrero hit his 40th homer on Jameson Taillon’s 13th pitch. The slugger and his Hall of Famer father joined Cecil and Prince Fielder as the second father-son duo to hit 40 homers.

In other Monday MLB action:

—Bryce Harper hit an early home run, Brad Miller connected twice and Jean Segura added a grand slam, leading Zack Wheeler and the Philadelphia Phillies to a 12-0 romp over the Milwaukee Brewers. Andrew McCutchen and Freddy Galvis also homered as Philadelphia won for the eighth time in the last 10 games to stay in the playoff chase. The Phillies have beaten the NL Central-leading Brewers five straight times this year.

—Frank Schwindel hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs topped the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 for their season-high seventh straight win. Schwindel’s single through the right side scored Alfonso Rivas, who started the rally with a pinch-hit single off Michael Lorenzen and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Schwindel is batting .441 (15 for 34) with six homers and 14 RBIs during his current eight-game hitting streak. The Reds lost for the seventh time in nine games.

— Carter Kieboom and Andrew Stevenson hit RBI singles in the ninth inning off Edwin Díaz and the Washington Nationals rallied once again, edging the New York Mets 4-3 in the finale of a five-game series. The Nationals, who had lost eight of their last nine, were 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position prior to the ninth. Pete Alonso hit his 30th home run of the season for New York, which fell four games behind idle Atlanta in the NL East.

— Andrew Benintendi hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, then reached above the left field wall to take away a potential tying home run in the ninth, sending the Kansas City Royals over the Baltimore Orioles 3-2. Hanser Alberto homered against his former team to help the Royals win in their first visit to Camden Yards since August 2019.

— Ke’Bryan Hayes and Yoshi Tsutsugo each hit a two-run single during Pittsburgh’s four-run seventh inning, and the Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 to stop their six-game losing streak. Hayes finished with three hits, and Tsutsugo, Jacob Stallings and Cole Tucker each had two. Kevin Newman hit a two-run homer in the first for Pittsburgh. Niko Goodrum hit a two-run double for Detroit.

NFL teams dealing with outbreak

UNDATED (AP) — The Tennessee Titans’ COVID-19 outbreak is nearing an end even with two starting offensive linemen still on the reserve list. Not everyone around the NFL may be as healthy to kick off this season with COVID-19 proving to be an issue hovering over another season.

The Titans’ outbreak reached at least 14 with 10 of those players and five starters. Several other NFL teams may be without some players and starters for season openers. Miami and Carolina each put offensive linemen on the reserve list Monday with the Jets and Chiefs both monitoring players for possible returns.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

— The Chiefs remained without All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu after his positive test for COVID-19 as the two-time defending AFC champions began preparing Monday for their season opener against Cleveland. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that Mathieu remained in the league’s protocol. He was vaccinated, so that means Mathieu has yet to return two negative tests taken 24 hours apart.

— Panthers starting right guard John Miller has been placed on the COVID-19 reserve list and will miss Carolina’s season opener on Sunday against the New York Jets. Panthers coach Matt Rhule said Miller will be out 10 days, which according to league rules would indicate that he was an unvaccinated player who tested positive. Rhule said Dennis Daley will start in his place. A six-year NFL veteran, Miller started 14 games last season for the Panthers.

— New York Jets wide receiver Jamison Crowder is recovering from symptoms of COVID-19 and his status for the opening game at Carolina remains uncertain. Coach Robert Saleh said Monday that Crowder is vaccinated against the virus, but the receiver’s availability for the season opener will depend on how he feels and tests.

— San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance showed signs of progress in returning from a finger injury but there are still questions about whether he will be able to play in the season opener. Lance no longer needed a splint on the index finger on his throwing hand after suffering a small chip fracture in the exhibition finale on Aug. 29. But during the open portion of practice for reporters, Lance didn’t make any throws.

— Curtis Samuel took part in Washington’s Labor Day practice and looks like a candidate to play in the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers after missing training camp. Samuel spent time on the NFL’s COVID-19 list and has been hampered by a groin injury since offseason workouts. Coach Ron Rivera says Samuel was a limited participant and the staff does not believe the receiver needs to take part in a full practice to play Sunday.
