BALTIMORE (AP) — The Preakness is the first horse race to make and auction off one-of-a-kind digital souvenirs known as nonfungible tokens. Officials hope it helps horse racing and the event reach a younger audience. There are 17 of the digital items up for auction through Sunday, including full videos from some of the most memorable Preakness races throughout history and a rendering of the Woodlawn Vase trophy. Some of the auction winners will even get real-life experiences like a trip to the winner’s circle for the 2021 Preakness or a replica of the Woodlawn Vase.
