Harmful algal bloom confirmed on Old Springfield Reservoir, health officials say

FRANKFORT, Ky. – A public health advisory has been issued for Old Springfield Reservoir near Springfield, Kentucky regarding the presence of a harmful algal bloom in the area.
According to officials, observations and a sample collected on Oct. 26 confirmed the presence of the algal bloom.
The reservoir is not utilized as a public drinking water source, according to the Commonwealth.
Harmful algal blooms occur when excess nutrients, phosphorus and nitrogen, sunny conditions, warm temperatures and low-flow water conditions take place, officials say. They may appear as slicks of opaque, bright-green paint, but closer inspection often reveals a grainy, sawdust-like appearance.
Recreational activities that result in physical contact with water, such as swimming and wading, are not recommended in areas impacted by harmful algal blooms. Recommended precautions to avoid exposure to HABs can be found here.
If you have contact with water containing blue-green algae, officials say you should rinse off with clean, fresh water. In some cases, officials say a rash will appear after prolonged exposure. Other symptoms may include stomach pain, headache, coughing, watery eyes, nose irritation or sore throat.
Children and people who are prone to respiratory allergies or asthma may be particularly sensitive to HABs. If symptoms persist, officials say to contact a healthcare provider. Additional information about the health effects of exposure to HABs is available here.
