Governor orders flags to half-staff to honor overdose victims

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Andy Beshear is ordering flags to be flown at half-staff Monday at government buildings in observance of Overdose Awareness Day in Kentucky, according to a release.

Gov. Beshear says the observance will take place from sunrise until sunset and the Governor’s Mansion will be lit purple. The color is designated to show support for overdose awareness.

“As we recognize Overdose Awareness Day here in the commonwealth, we remember those we have lost, offer support to their families and stand with those still struggling,” said Gov. Beshear. “We’ve made a lot of progress, but we know there is always more to do. One life lost to overdose is one too many. And we’re committed to continuing this progress until that number gets to zero.”

Overdose Awareness Day is an annual global event held on Aug. 31. The event is designed to bring awareness and reduce the stigma of overdose deaths, according to the release.

Flags in Kentucky are currently being flown at half-staff to honor Dolly Parton.

All Kentucky residents are encouraged to participate, according to the release.
