Former Caverna substitute teacher arrested on charge of grooming a minor
CAVE CITY, Ky. – A former substitute teacher for Caverna Independent School District is charged with grooming a minor.
According to the Cave City Police Department, officers were contacted by an administrator from the school district about a potential grooming incident.
Authorities say they immediately responded to Caverna Schools and opened an investigation.
Police say they discovered 60-year-old Maurice Bennett, a Caverna district substitute at the time, had engaged in grooming behaviors toward a student.
Cave City officers obtained a warrant of arrest for Bennett for violation of KRS 510.160 – grooming a minor.
Bennett was taken into custody on Wednesday, Sept. 2 without further incident.
The Cave City Police Department thanks the Caverna Independent School District for its swift response to the allegations.
The investigation remains ongoing currently.
The substitute teacher was removed from the district’s substitute teacher list and “will not be permitted to serve in our schools while this matter is addressed,” according to a statement by superintendent Amanda Abell.
“We are committed to cooperating fully with law enforcement and child protection authorities throughout their investigation. Because this is an active matter involving student safety, we must respect the investigative process and protect the privacy of those involved,” said Abell.
