Democrats divided over Trump impeachment

(NBC News) Democrats are divided over whether to impeach President Donald Trump for obstructing the investigation into Russia interfering in our election.

Some Democrats think there’s already enough evidence to impeach President Trump, while others insist it’s futile because Republicans in charge of the Senate would never find him guilty.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confronted the Democratic divide in a letter to rank-and-file members and a subsequent conference call with them on Monday.

“While our views range from proceeding to investigate the findings of the Mueller report or proceeding directly to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed down a path of finding the truth,” Pelosi wrote in the letter.

Pelosi promised to pursue extensive investigations into the president, but would not commit to beginning impeachment proceedings until they see a full, unredacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

The House Judiciary Committee has issued two subpoenas, following the release of a redacted version of Robert Mueller’s report. The first subpoena was to see the full version of the report by May 1, and the second was sent to Former White House Council Don McGahn. According to the Mueller report, McGahn threatened to quit instead of carrying out President Trump’s instructions to fire Mueller.

A third subpoena, from the House Oversight Committee, demands years of financial records from the Trump organization. The president’s legal team is suing to stop Democrats from getting those records, as the subpoena heads to court.
