Dan Cherry receives DAR Medal of Honor for lifetime of service
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Retired U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Dan Cherry was recognized Friday with the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution’s Medal of Honor, celebrating a lifetime of military service, patriotism and community leadership.
The award was presented during a ceremony at Aviation Heritage Park, where family members, veterans, community leaders and members of the Samuel Davies Chapter of the DAR gathered to honor Cherry’s decades of service to both the nation and south-central Kentucky.
The DAR Medal of Honor is one of the organization’s highest recognitions, presented to individuals whose dedication to their country and community exemplifies outstanding patriotism, leadership and service.
During the ceremony, speakers highlighted Cherry’s distinguished Air Force career, his leadership in preserving local aviation history and his commitment to serving others long after retiring from the military.
Cherry said receiving the national honor came as a surprise.
“It was totally unexpected,” Cherry said. “I’m so flattered, so honored. It’s kind of hard to believe.”
He also shared that having his two daughters attend the ceremony made the recognition even more meaningful.
“They’re a big part of the support I received over the years,” Cherry said.
Beyond his military career, Cherry has played a key role in developing Aviation Heritage Park, helping transform it into a destination that honors military aviators while educating future generations about Bowling Green’s rich aviation history.
Following the ceremony, Cherry encouraged younger generations to continue investing in their communities.
“The benefits that you enjoy today did not happen by accident,” Cherry said. “There were people who somehow found time to give back to their community.”
He also challenged others to follow that example.
“Everybody’s got something to contribute,” Cherry said. “Don’t forget, you have an obligation to do so.”
Cherry said he hopes both his military service and Aviation Heritage Park continue inspiring future generations to preserve the legacy of those who served before them while giving back to their own communities.
