Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society nears capacity during summer intake surge

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – The Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society is experiencing one of its busiest summers on record, with animal intakes continuing to climb as staff urge the community to adopt, foster and support local shelters.

Humane Society Director Lorri Hare said the shelter had already taken in 1,055 animals during the month of July as of Tuesday, about 45 more than at the same point last month. She expects that number to reach approximately 1,200 by the end of the month, with July and August historically being the shelter’s busiest months. 

“I think averaging 40 to 45 intakes every single day is definitely a hardship on the shelter and the staff and the animals,” Hare said.

Hare said the increase is driven by kitten and puppy season, as well as dogs and cats roaming during heat cycles. She added that shelters across Kentucky are facing similar challenges.

“Summer in a shelter environment is extremely difficult. It’s not just for us — it’s shelters everywhere,” she said.

While adoptions are always encouraged, Hare said there are many ways community members can help relieve overcrowding.

“If you can’t adopt, talk to other people that may be looking for a pet. You could donate, sponsor animals or sponsor spay and neuter. Fostering is a great way to help,” Hare said.

Hare said the shelter had no empty dog kennels and only one available cat cage remaining Tuesday, making community support more important than ever.

“If you’re thinking about a pet, right now is the time,” Hare said. “We just really, really are hoping that it doesn’t come to making some really hard decisions.”
