BGFD dog ‘Millie’ is only ATF accelerant detection canine in Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Let us reintroduce you to Millie. The Bowling Green Fire Department dog and the only ATF accelerant detection canine in the state of Kentucky.

She is a six-year-old black lab. She was trained by the ATF when she was two years old…. which is the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bureau.

Millie finds and identifies accelerants in fires. She saves time and accuracy for the department- and over the past 4 years she has been 100% accurate.

She can be a great way to educate the youth in our community.

“We’ll do demonstrations with her in schools, we’ve got these kids’ attention with this dog and what she can do and how amazing she is but while we have their attention we’re also hitting on fire safety messages and tips that they can take home and practice and do,” said her handler and investigator Michael Cornwell.

Something about Millie that’s different from other dogs is that she is a food reward dog, meaning all of the food comes from her handler’s hand. She’s rewarded with food for the work that she does.
