Applications for family fall camp opens for the Center for Courageous Kids

ALLEN COUNTY, Ky.- A new season prompts for new applications at the Center for Courageous Kids.

“We’re transitioning from our summer independent camps to our fall family retreat weekends,” said Tia Geter, the special events coordinator for the Center for Courageous Kids.

The camp’s mission is to present an all-inclusive envelope for children with disabilities and lifelong illnesses. The organization was founded by Elizabeth Turner Campbell in 2004. Despite the fact that if a child has medical conditions, they provide a free of charge fun space for the kids.

Now that summer is over and school starts back, the fall camp is coming into play.

“It gives the diagnosed child an opportunity to come and experience camp with their family members in their household,” Geter said.

A chance to “fall” in love with an all-inclusive environment fun, including the parents. According to the U.S.  Department of Agriculture, it costs families over $200,000 to take care of a child with a disability to raise them to age 17.

Tia Geter, the special events coordinator for the Center of Courageous Kids, said this camp gives parents and caregivers a chance to breathe, especially those who are experiencing a new diagnosis.

“Parents get opportunities to network and find community with each other. Sometimes they might feel alone and be the only person in their area that their child has this specific diagnosis. They’re able to come here and be around 32 other families who have experienced the diagnosis in different ways,” she said.

Geter, who was also recently named in the 2026-27 class of leadership for Bowling Green, said her position allows her to pour into her community.

“I’m super excited. I think that I love this community. I am getting the opportunity to be able to pour into the community,” Geter said.

She said that the unity in community helps build a better south-central Kentucky, even at the Center for Courageous Kids.

“Being a part of leadership groups like this is important for the Center for Courageous Kids because it gives us an opportunity to get in front of the communities. So, in leadership Bowling Green, we have several different projects that we’ll work on and be around different people and that’s a way that I can introduce what the center for courageous kids does,” she said.
