Community rallies around sick Bowling Green child to help with medical expenses

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – One community, one superhero, one goal – to save a child’s life.

The Burch family is awestruck seeing the community come together to support their sick son in need of medication.

Sawyer Burch, a Bowling Green four-year-old, was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare and life threatening metabolic disease.

After his parents found out his medication could cost $150,000 per year and insurance is not covering it, local businesses and individuals stepped up to help the family.

Wednesday, Shogun Express brought a food truck to the WNKY parking lot, sold food and donated all of the proceeds to the family.

One customer said she came out to support Sawyer and his family.

“I go to church with them. They are a really sweet family. They work really hard and every kid deserves a reason to live old enough to be a grandparent,” said a customer.

The truck was so successful, it actually ran completely out of food and had to shut down early.

By late afternoon the family received all of the money raised from the food truck sales.

Katie Burch, Sawyer’s mom, is at a loss for words seeing the community show so much love for her son.

“I am not from here, and I have just always loved Bowling Green and this just made me fall in love with Bowling Green even more. The people here are just wonderful and they want to help and people I don’t even know are being so, so generous,” said Burch.

Another business in Bowling Green opening soon has announced another fundraiser for Sawyer as well.

Dunkin Donuts, owned by the Rouleau family, will be opening another location on the U.S. 31-W By-Pass near The Medical Center at Bowling Green.

On opening day, all of the proceeds from all medium hot or iced coffees sold at their store will be donated to the family, according to Zach and Carter Rouleau.

“We came across the Facebook story, and I just kind of read through it and it was just, you know, really moving. It’s hard to read about a family struggling in their type of situation. You know, no family should ever have to worry about being able to afford medical bills for their child,” said Zach Rouleau.

There will also be a donation bucket set up that day at the store for the family.

The opening day fundraiser is set tentatively for May 8.
