Kentucky lawyer charged with stealing from victim’s children

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A federal grand jury has charged an Eastern Kentucky attorney with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars meant for the children of a man killed in a car wreck. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Timothy Belcher, of Elkhorn City, won a settlement in a wrongful death suit in 2004. The indictment says that instead of giving the money to the victim’s children, Belcher used it for personal expenses. An escrow account had more than $800,000 in 2007 and just $389 in 2018. Belcher was indicted on Thursday on seven charges of fraud and three charges of filing false tax returns. The bank fraud charges are punishable by up to 30 years in prison
