Puppies endangered after person dumps dogs onto road, hits one with car
GLASGOW, Ky. – A near tragedy was avoided over the weekend after someone illegally dumped puppies on the side of the road near an animal shelter in Barren County.
A litter of 8 puppies was abandoned on Trojan Trail in Glasgow.
One puppy, now named Oreo, is lucky to be alive after the person responsible drove off.
“The dogs obviously knew the car because they all ran with the car trying to chase after the car. Then at that point they pulled into our parking lot and then went to pull out and when they went to pull out one of the puppies was under their car and they hit the puppy and you see the puppy roll,” said Connie Greer, the director of the Barren River Animal Welfare Association.
A BRAWA employee and some good Samaritans caught the loose animals and brought them inside.
Oreo and the other puppies are doing just fine and received no major injuries.
Greer is pleading with the public to never drop animals off on the side of the road or leave them unattended.
Greer said there is a right way to surrender an animal and shelter workers are not there to judge you.
“When you find an animal that has been left at the door or you see one that’s been tied up or somebody throws one over an 8-foot fence, which has happened numerous times here, which could break their legs what-have-you. It’s gut wrenching to you,” said Greer.
Cases like this show a dark side of humanity according to Glasgow-Barren County Animal Control Officer Shelley Furlong.
“I feel that if they are just going to drop their animals, they didn’t have any compassion whatsoever. And I have asked myself before, would they do their children this way? Because my animals are my children too,” said Furlong.
The pups will be ready to go home with a new family by the end of the week.
If caught, animal control workers say the people responsible could be facing seven counts of second-degree animal cruelty and one count of first-degree animal cruelty, which is a felony.
