Glasgow Police Department adopts accountability policy

GLASGOW, Ky. – The Glasgow Police Department has recently adopted a new policy related to ethics following a nationwide call for change.

The policy, while already expected of officers prior to the introduction of the policy, has been set in place to explain the legal and moral obligation officers have to intervene.

The policy states that a law enforcement officer has a duty to intervene on behalf of a citizen whose constitutional rights are being violated by another officer.

Officers now have a written policy explanation of their duty to protect the citizens they serve if they see another officer conducting themselves in an unethical or illegal manner, according to Glasgow Police Chief Jennifer Arbogast.

The policy also states any time an officer must intervene, the officer has to notify a supervisor of the intervention.

A supervisor is expected to document the incident and investigate the circumstances.
