Gordmans donates thousands to local schools on opening day

GLASGOW, Ky.- Gordmans opened 25 Kentucky stores Tuesday, and as part of the celebrations gave out $1,000 checks to school districts in each town.

New stores mean more employment opportunities for those cities. The discount retailer opened a store in Glasgow and another in Russellville Tuesday. In Glasgow, store officials gathered with other employees and school officials who were happy to receive the donations.

“It really impresses me that as soon as they get here, that they want to invest back into education and our students. I’m very appreciative of that being principal of Glasgow High School,” said Glasgow High School principal Dr. Amy Allen said.

All schools receiving the checks can use the extra funding in any way they like. Glasgow High School will be using the money to benefit the cheerleading team. Glasgow High School cheer coach Karla Bowles said the extra money will come in handy.

“I’m very excited and very thankful. Cheerleading is a very expensive sport, so we’re very thankful that we got this donation,” Bowles said.

Bowles said this check will help shout out the message of the hard work the cheerleading team does, and that she’s glad to be part of a school that emphasizes the importance of each and every department.

“We are very blessed at Glasgow High School. We have a lot of support. Coach Cassidy and Dr. Allen are always good to cheer us on and support us in everything we need,” Bowles said.

Glasgow store manager Rick Mckee said the community has been supportive.

“This is a community that we want to be in and we want to support. Everyone here so far has been just so wonderful to us. They’ve been supporting us, and it’s been a lot of encouragement. We’re glad to be here,” Mckee said.
