News 40’s Scott Burchett explains weather: Falling into winter
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The jack-o’-lanterns have been put away!
The calendar has flipped a page to November. That means cold weather and the end of the growing season, thanks to the first “killing frost.”
It also means the end of allergy season. And for those plants that may be a bit tougher, the first freeze is likely on the way!
Historically, in south-central Kentucky, the first freeze is during the last half of October.
Since we haven’t had a freeze yet this year, we’re running a little behind.
And the freezing cold weather will last well into next spring.
While temperatures will start to warm in January, our seasonal climb out of freeze territory won’t happen until around the middle of next April.
And the last frost is usually a few weeks later.
That’s why it’s important to not set new plants in the ground too soon!
And if you’re a snow lover, you shouldn’t have to wait much longer to see the first flakes.
They usually appear in mid- to late November.
That doesn’t mean the snow sticks…it just means the atmosphere is conditioned with air cold enough to support snow while having the right amount of moisture…
And that’s a tough balance to strike.
