The Medical Center at Bowling Green becomes first hospital in region to offer new treatment for metastatic prostate cancer

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Medical Center at Bowling Green says it is the first hospital in the region and the seventh hospital in the state to offer a new treatment for metastatic prostate cancer.

According to Med Center Health, Pluvicto is a “targeted radioligand therapy used to treat advanced prostate cancer in patients who have been previously treated with androgen receptor pathway inhibition.” The organization says Pluvicto is a “radiopharmaceutical therapy that binds to prostate cancer cells expressing PSMA, while limiting radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.”

“When prostate cancer spreads, patients may face fewer treatment options,” said Dr. Diego Cabrera, oncologist and hematologist at Med Center Health. “Pluvicto has been one of the best new treatments available for prostate cancer. Offering Pluvicto locally gives eligible patients access to an important treatment while allowing them to remain closer to their families and support systems.”

Health officials say metastatic prostate cancer happens when cancer spreads outside of the prostate to other areas, like bones or lymph nodes, causing treatments to be limited.

Med Center Health says Pluvicto provides advanced radiopharmaceutical therapy that targets cancer cells, allowing patients the chance for better outcomes and an improved quality of life.

“Our Nuclear Medicine team is proud to continue our collaboration with the Cancer Center,” said Laura Ortiz, nuclear medicine director at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. “Before we began Pluvicto, patients were traveling hours for radioligand therapy. Providing this treatment in Bowling Green reduces that burden and represents another step forward in specialized cancer care for our region.”
