Local government officials discuss electric scooters in the city
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Local government officials are discussing how to regulate the use of electric scooters if they become popular in the area.
Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson believes companies that operate electric scooters may decide to set up shop here in the near future.
Here’s how the scooters operate. They are electric and parked throughout a specific area. If someone wants to use one, the scooters accept credit and debit cards through a mobile app. Then a rider can hop on and go.
Amid safety concerns, Nashville placed restrictions on the transportation devices, but in Kentucky, the law does not permit those kinds of bans.
These kinds of scooters have been causing other cities major safety concerns as riders have taken the scooters onto interstates and driven them erratically through traffic.
Bowling Green City Commission is focusing on how to avoid these issues if the scooters make their way into the area.
The exact plans for handling these scooters are still being discussed by city leaders.
Wilkerson says these electric scooters could help people travel in a cost-efficient manner, but safety is the city’s priority.
“What the city hopes out of it is to make sure that it doesn’t cause the troubles we have seen in other communities,” said Wilkerson.
