Warren County sold delinquent property taxes to collectors

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Wednesday morning, the county sold delinquent property taxes to collectors in order to recoup tax money that has gone unpaid.

If you own a home, you have a real estate property tax that’s on your home every year. 

Warren County starts collecting in November, and those bills are collected by the sheriff’s department until April.

Then, if still unpaid, they’re turned over to the county clerk’s office as delinquent. 

So every year, normally in August, the county will sell those bills to a third party.

Until those taxes are paid, a homeowner cannot sell their property.

“I do want to make it very clear that when a party buys those bills, that doesn’t mean they’re buying rights to your property. It’s just for the property tax. Now, they do generally add, say their fees to it. So it will be much more expensive than it is when they’re being collected during the year,” said Lynette Yates, Warren County clerk.

There were 42 participants Wednesday morning, and the sale was held in a lottery type of layout.
