Bowling Green man allegedly drives intoxicated, crashes into mailboxes and another vehicle

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A Bowling Green man is charged with driving under the influence and wanton endangerment.

According to a uniform citation, the Bowling Green Police Department responded to a collision in the 2300 block of Nashville Road late Thursday afternoon.

An officer says two vehicles were damaged after one crashed into the back of the other.

BGPD says it received calls regarding the vehicle striking multiple mailboxes on Nashville Road near Campbell Lane. Witnesses say the car continued onto Nashville Road, according to the citation.

A witness told police the car was missing a passenger-side mirror. Police say they located the mirror next to the mailboxes.

An officer made contact with 30-year-old Austin Melvin of Bowling Green inside the vehicle.

The officer says Melvin had bloodshot eyes, was slurring his speech and detected the smell of suspected alcohol.

According to the uniform citation, Melvin agreed to a standardized field sobriety test.

The officer says Melvin refused to continue the test and was taken into custody.

Two children were found in the back seat of Melvin’s vehicle, the citation states.

The officer says two empty Fireball Whiskey shooters were located in the driver’s side door and on the driver’s side floorboard.

Melvin was taken to a local hospital, where blood was drawn and taken into evidence.

He was then transported to the Warren County Regional Jail.

Melvin is charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol .08, second offense, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree wanton endangerment, possession of an open alcoholic beverage controlled in a motor vehicle prohibited and leaving the scene of an accident – failure to render aid or assistance.
