Logan County High School unveils major renovations to classrooms, several departments
RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (WNKY) – Logan County High School marked a new era Tuesday with a ribbon cutting and grand reopening ceremony, unveiling a sweeping, multi-year renovation that modernizes one of the county’s largest and oldest educational facilities.
The $33 million project includes a nearly 600-seat performing arts center, expanded labs and shop spaces, a redesigned cafeteria and courtyard, updated classrooms, and a more secure front entrance. Much of the work revitalizes sections of the building that had not been significantly upgraded since the school opened in 1982.
Superintendent Dr. Dan Costellow said the improvements reflect both the needs of students and the vision shared by the community.
“We renovated hallways and classrooms. We expanded our science labs, our agriculture shop, our construction shop… and built a nearly 600-seat auditorium, which we’re really proud of,” Costellow said. “Students and staff did a great job of working around the spaces that were being renovated… it turned out really great, and we’re really proud of it.”
Students led tours through the new additions, highlighting brighter hallways, expanded dining areas, new artwork, and redesigned learning spaces. Senior Caris Taylor said the changes have already transformed the school environment.
“My favorite part of this new addition is definitely the auditorium,” Taylor said. “I feel like it makes our school so much more open and airy… I think it’s a much better environment for people to learn in.”
The renovation added a dedicated choir room for the first time, expanded the band and art rooms, and brought major updates to career-focused areas such as culinary arts, agriculture and construction, programs district leaders say support growing pathways throughout the region.
Principal Caycee Spears said the project honors the school’s role as a central hub for the community.
“The goal is to be a community school and to be able to bring the community in,” Spears said. “Any time we can celebrate with them, because it is a school for everyone in the community.”
Construction began in November 2021 and continued in phases while students were in the building, requiring temporary classroom shifts and changes to traffic flow. Costellow said the work is now fully complete, aside from minor touch-up items.
The performing arts center is already booking community events and will be available to K–8 schools across the district. Meanwhile, the district’s next major construction project, a $10 million expansion of the Logan County Career and Technical Center, remains underway.
School officials say the renovations will help ensure that Logan County High School can continue offering modern, hands-on learning experiences for decades to come.
