AAA expecting more drivers for Thanksgiving

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – When you make your trip home for the Thanksgiving holiday in a few days, be prepared to share the roadway.

AAA is expecting a record number of drivers on the roadways this year and an increase in those flying home as well.

With recent flight cancellations, even more drivers may be out and about as well.

Officials with AAA say the best time to leave is early, and allow yourself a little extra time to factor in traffic or delays you may experience.

“We actually are expecting a Thanksgiving for the record books. Nearly 82 million people across the country are going to be going 50 miles or more from home… and the vast majority of them, about 90% or so, are expected to be driving. That said, we are expecting busy times at the airport as well, with about a 2% increase of fliers. Imagine the last couple of Thanksgivings, add more people. That’s what you should expect when you’re heading out,’ Jim Garrity, director of public affairs for AAA’s East Central region, says.

Garrity also adds for those flying home, have a backup plan in place before you leave in case your flight gets delayed or even cancelled.
