Bowling Green community comes together in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
BOWLING GREEN Ky.-A crowd of people marched in the cold Monday to remember the life and legacy of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Beginning at the Warren County Justice Center, the crowd traversed downtown to State Street Baptist Church, where the celebration of life’s work continued. Several speakers with organizations like Megan’s Mobile Grocery spoke on how the community has used Dr. King’s lessons to grow, something church members enjoyed hearing.
“I think it’s really a wonderful ceremony. We need to keep informed about our community and what people are doing in the community, and the accomplishments made in our community,” said State Street Baptist Church member Sheri Dawson.
“It’s definitely a great thing to be happening here in Bowling Green. Bringing all races together. Honestly, you can’t go wrong,” added member Walter Jones.
In addition to the church members and other people in the community, elected officials like State Representative Patti Minter, and Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower attended to show their support for king’s legacy.
“That means that as a community, we’re working together, the officials and the people,” Dawson said.
It also serves as a symbol that Dr. King’s teachings were never forgotten.
“It lets me know that we can, and are able, and will do. It’s just a matter of who all will come together as a unit. We’re all a big family,” Jones said.
Members said these celebrations are just one way to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King.
“It’s been nothing but love every time. I really do enjoy it. I’m glad we’re able to come together as one unit. I really think that’s what Martin Luther King was looking for. I feel like we’re helping him out at this point,” Jones said.
