Hart County Veteran’s Committee Asks for Return of Stolen Fire Pit

HORSE CAVE, Ky. (WNKY)  – The Hart County Veterans Committee is asking for the return of a stolen fire pit used during their first official flag retirement ceremony this past Saturday.

“To me, that was an honor, because we are a new organization,” said Randy Schrier, a member of the committee. “Everything that we do comes out of our own pockets.”

The group retired several American flags during the ceremony, using a brand-new fire pit meant specifically for that purpose.

“You’re talking about the ashes of the flags of our fallen,” Schrier said. “So I bought a brand new fire pit so that the ashes were separate than anything else.”

The fire pit was left near the gazebo at the Veterans Hall to cool. But when members returned Monday, it was gone.

“Somebody decided they needed it more than we veterans do, and we’re very disappointed in that,” Schrier said.

“A lot of us lost brothers and sisters,” he added. “So, yes, for a lot of us, it’s very personal.”

The ashes were meant to be incorporated into a new veterans memorial planned for the site.

“It would mean a lot, because we would have the ashes of those red flags that we can add to the memorial when it goes in,” Schrier said.

Despite the loss, Schrier said the group remains committed.

“It’s not going to stop us,” he said. “We’re still going to honor our veterans. We’re still going to honor our country.”

The committee is asking for the fire pit to be returned with no questions asked.

“It doesn’t matter to you,” Schrier said. “It matters to us. Just please bring it back.”
