Graves Gilbert dermatologist shares the importance of sun protection
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With summer just around the corner, you may feel ready to head out and enjoy the season.
Tomorrow is the summer solstice and the longest day of the year, so you’ll probably spend more time in the sun than normal. That’s why it’s important to protect yourself from the effects of the sun.
News 40 sat down with one dermatologist with Graves Gilbert Clinic, who shares the importance of keeping your skin protected while enjoying your summer activities.
Dr. Juliana Gilbert, a dermatologist with Graves Gilbert Clinic, says, “Up to 90% of skin cancers are caused by harmful UV rays, so sunscreen is one of the ways that you can help block some of the UV from reaching your skin.”
Experts warn the risks of not using sun protection aren’t only cosmetic, like photo aging – Gilbert says a sunburn could lead to skin cancer.
Sunscreen isn’t just for summer – experts recommend a daily routine of facial sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. They also say a wide brim hate should be used as well.
While summer serves as a reminder to use sun protection, this choice can be made all year long to keep you healthier in every season.
