A geomagnetic storm could produce northern lights across much of the United States as early as Sunday night.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for June 2, with geomagnetic disturbances potentially beginning the night of Sunday, June 1.

“The aurora may become visible over much of the northern half of the country and maybe as far south as Alabama to northern California,” NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center stated Saturday.

NOAA states timing and intensity of the coronal mass ejection to Earth that could cause this display is uncertain.

Viewing tips

In Kentucky, residents will only have a potential chance of viewing northern light activity through a camera using long exposure Sunday night. It is not expected to be visible to the naked eye during this time.

In addition, viewers will want to move away as far as they can from light pollution.
