UPDATE: Woman killed after being hit by vehicle in Bowling Green, driver arrested
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – One person has been arrested after a local woman was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday evening.
Bowling Green Police Department public information officer Ronnie Ward says the department is investigating the incident after receiving a call around 7 p.m. regarding a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on the 100 block of Riverwood Avenue.
Ward says the pedestrian, identified as 69-year-old Kimberly Howard of Bowling Green, was killed. According to Ward, Howard was a resident of the street where the incident took place.
Ward confirmed this was originally reported as a hit-and-run, however, the driver returned to the scene Saturday night.
Marlynn Elias, 48, of Bowling Green was arrested. She faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid/assist with death or serious injury and no operators moped license.
According to a uniform citation, when police spoke with witnesses, one stated they saw the woman lying in the road after hearing a thud.
The citation further states the witness stated they had spoken to Elias and asked if she ran over the woman, to which she replied she had before driving off.
Howard was transported to The Medical Center at Bowling Green and died due to her injuries.
Police say they were notified around 8:39 p.m. that Elias had returned to the scene. According to police, Elias stated Howard had been standing in the roadway and that she stopped the vehicle when “the victim began to hit the vehicle.”
Police say Elias stated there had been a short verbal argument between the two before she left the scene. According to police, Elias stated while speaking to someone a few houses down, she denied hitting the woman with her vehicle and had seen the victim lying in the road.
According to the citation, Elias told officers she dropped off the people that had been in her vehicle and spoke to a family member about what had happened. She stated she “felt bad and returned to the scene,” police say.
She further stated she had left the scene due to not having a license and being scared of being arrested, authorities say.
Elias remains at the Warren County Regional Jail.
Ward says officers conducted a neighborhood canvass to gather video to determine a time of the incident. News 40 will provide further updates as they are released.
