Free rabies vaccine and microchip clinic to be hosted March 22

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Rabies can be terrifying for anybody to come face to face with, especially pet owners – however, rabies vaccines can be pricey for your pets.

This weekend though, the City of Bowling Green, along with the humane society, are hosting a free rabies vaccine and microchipping clinic at Jennings Creek Elementary.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 22, you can bring your cats and dogs in for a free vaccination.

Bowling Green Animal Protection director Brad Schargorodski says that while their officers usually come into contact with pets with rabies, it’s the vaccine that has subdued the disease over the course of many decades.

“Prior to 1960 in the United States, there were about 100 deaths a year from rabies between 1960 and about 2018 there were about 130 total, so in a 50 almost 60 year time span there were only 100 total. prior to that there were 100 a year and that’s because of a robust vaccination plan.”

He says that microchips are also vital in case our pets get loose, allowing animals who are brought into the humane society to be reunited with their families faster.
