Glasgow Police Department warns of latest scam

Glasgow Police

GLASGOW, Ky. – The Glasgow Police Department wants to make the community aware of a scam involving the impersonation of law enforcement.

According to police, they have received several calls about someone identifying themselves as Sgt. Pickett with the Glasgow Police Department.

Police say the scammer states they have an arrest warrant and ask for money to clear the warrant.

The department says it does not have a Sgt. Pickett, and it does not call asking for money or information.

If you receive a call claiming to be law enforcement stating you have a warrant, the department says this is “almost certainly a scam.” You can also do the following if you get this call:

  • Hang up immediately.
  • Don’t engage in conversation or provide any information.
  • This includes personal or financial information.
  • If you’re concerned, contact the official law enforcement agency they claim to be from using a verified phone number (not the one on the caller ID) to confirm the legitimacy of the call.
  • Report the incident to the local police department and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
  • You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

In addition, police say to watch out for scam tactics, such as threats of arrest or legal action, requests for unusual payment methods, a fake or spoofed caller ID, urgency and limited-time offers, misuse of real names, use of real law enforcement employee names to seem credible and intimidation tactics.

If you have any questions about this, you may call the Glasgow Police Department at 270-651-6165.
