Holiday food means extra work for plumbers

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – After the holiday’s many people are stuck trying to figure out what to do with all those leftovers. If you’re thinking about dumping it all down the garbage disposal, think again.

The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year for plumbers. Turkey bones, casserole and pie crust often end up dumped down the drain, and that sometimes causes a back up.

Chris Works is the service manager at Shane Elmore Plumbing, which serves Warren County.

WNKY joined Works on one of his calls Thursday morning. He helped a customer clear up a pipe clogged by potatoes.

Chris said he had a number of similar calls all day long.

“Today we’ve had a lot of drain calls. Matter fact we just figured out a pretty rough one for a lady, and it was all because of potatoes. All of these disposal companies do a good job of advertising that their disposal can take a lot of load, but it goes into a drain much smaller in diameter that’s gravity fed from there,” said Works.

Works also said the best way to get rid of dense food is to throw it in the trash.
