The library says he is “renowned for his powerful storytelling, with lyrical prose and “themes of identity, family and resilience.” De La Peña’s picture book, “Last Stop on Market Street,” won the prestigious Newbery Medal and was praised for its “heartfelt depiction of a young boy’s journey through his city with his grandmother, discovering beauty in everyday life.”

Another work of his, “Milo Imagines the World,” tells the story of a young boy as he sketches those around him on a subway ride and realizes everyone has a deeper story than what meets the eye.

In addition, de la Peña is also the author of seven young adult novels, including “Mexican WhiteBoy,” which was named a Best Book for Young Adults by the American Library Association.
