Kentucky attorney general activates price gouging hotline amid state of emergency
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Attorney General Russell Coleman has activated a price gouging hotline following an announced State of Emergency Saturday in Kentucky.
According to the attorney general’s office, Kentuckians who suspect price gouging during the winter storm can report it online by clicking here or by calling 1-888-432-9257.
The Office of Attorney General Russell Coleman says Kentucky law defines price gouging as “a grossly excessive charge – more than 10% above the price prior to the emergency declaration – that is not related to higher costs to the seller.”
Officials say a team of attorneys, investigators and staff with the Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection will look over complains and determine the potential of price gouging.
The price gouging law covers food, gasoline, shelter, transportation, emergency cleanup and repair or reconstruction services like tree removal, officials say.
“When disaster strikes and Kentuckians are concerned for their families’ safety, no one should have to worry if they are being taken advantage of. Our Office is determined to protect hardworking Kentuckians and send a message to predatory businesses,” Coleman said.
Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency on Saturday, Jan. 4 due to inclement weather. This activates the state’s price gouging laws. To learn more, click here.
