Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 provides winter weather system update

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Kentucky State highway crews from each county in District 3 will be reporting for duty late Saturday night and in the early morning in advance of a winter weather system.

The National Weather Service Louisville has put the entire District 3 area under a Winter Weather Advisory, according to KYTC District 3.

Hazardous driving conditions are possible beginning in the early morning hours Sunday. Temperatures are expected to drop just below freezing and icing is a possibility. Crews will deploy to treat the roads as needed. The winter weather system is expected to change over to rain by Sunday afternoon. However, overnight Sunday into Monday rain, ice and snow are expected to create hazardous driving conditions. The Monday morning commute could be treacherous.

Transportation officials say the District 3 area is on the borderline of possibly receiving more severe winter weather, so a degree or two difference in temperature will make a big difference. Drivers are advised to keep updated with the latest weather forecast throughout the night through Monday.

Each county in the District 3 area is fully stocked on salt and other road treatment agents. The district has around 20,000 tons of salt on hand across all 10 district counties with 68 KYTC snow plows along with 16 contract trucks.
