Scottsville man charged with careless driving

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A Scottsville man is facing several charges after a traffic stop on Monday.

According to a uniform citation, the Kentucky State Police Post 3 observed a red 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier traveling northbound shortly after 5 p.m. at a high speed on U.S. 231.

Troopers say they confirmed the driver’s speed to be 80 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone.

The citation states the vehicle did not have a driver side mirror and had two open alcoholic beverages inside. Troopers say they also confirmed the driver, identified as Eric Cox, 29, of Scottsville had a suspended operator’s license from a prior DUI. He was required to use an ignition interlock device to drive, which was not present, authorities say.

Troopers say Cox was asked when he consumed the beverages and stated this happened at 10 a.m. that day.

During the traffic stop, troopers say it was heavily snowing and 28 degrees, and standard field sobriety tests were not performed. However, authorities say a portable breath test suggested Cox had consumed an alcoholic beverage.

Based on observations, weather conditions, speed and the open beverages, Cox was arrested and transported to the Warren County Detention Center on a careless driving charge. While at the jail, troopers say Cox consented to an intoxilyzer, which showed .050.

He is also charged with speeding 25 mph over the limit, driving on a DUI suspended license, first offense (aggravated circumstances), possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle prohibited, no rear view mirror and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/substance.
