Bowling Green Independent elementary school takes Farm to School Field Trip

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – Need More Acres Farm is welcoming in hundreds of elementary schoolers this week as Farm to School Month comes to a close.

Bowling Green Independent Schools will be changing things up just a bit this week with their fourth annual trip to Need More Acres as they maximize their funding received from the federal fresh fruits and vegetable grant they apply for to encourage healthy eating.

This year, students are learning about the plant cycle and taking home some seeds of their own.

News 40 spoke to Dalla Emerson, BGISD’s food operations director, who said this is her favorite time of the year because many children are for the first time ever seeing a farm and exactly where foods come from.

We also spoke to Michelle Howell, co-owner of Need More Acres.

Howell told us that as a small scale farm, their hope is to inspire kids to maybe pick up a spade for themselves one day and educate our younger generation that the apple or orange didn’t just appear at the grocery store.
