WKU economics professor shares tips to tackle Labor Day grocery prices

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – For those gearing up to celebrate Labor Day with a festive barbecue, now is the ideal time to shop for groceries.

Despite the high cost of food, holiday sales can offer some relief for those looking to save. Economists suggest that while deals are more frequent during holidays, they do not significantly impact the overall inflation rate.

Sebastian Leguizamon, associate professor of economics, explains, “When we say downward pressure on prices, it means that while individual items may decrease, overall prices tend to increase.”

Inflation remains influenced by supply and demand dynamics, making it challenging to see substantial drops in prices.

Even with temporary discounts, the general trend is for prices to continue rising. Shoppers are advised to take advantage of any holiday deals while budgeting carefully.
