Your child’s swimsuit color could save their life
(CNN) – Here’s some important safety information as people hit the water as summer approaches.
Water safety experts have taken a close look at how the color of swimwear may influence how visible a child is under water.
And they’ve found the color of your child’s swimsuit could impact their safety at a swimming pool or the beach.
Alive Solutions, a company which specializes in water safety, found in two separate experiments, certain swimsuit colors are easier to spot in a swimming pool or open water.
Spotting the suits could help a lifeguard or others save a child who is drowning.
The company looked at 14 colors through independent tests that were not published in a peer-reviewed journal.
In a swimming pool with a light-colored bottom, the tests showed neon pink and neon orange appeared to be the most visible.
In 18 inches of lake water, the tests showed bright neon colors, including neon orange, yellow and green, were most visible against the lake bottom, but neon pink didn’t perform well.
The American Lifeguard Association says swimwear colors to avoid are light blue gray or green, which can blend with water and surroundings.
An expert says the goal is that you never have to rely on bathing suit color to find a child in a drowning situation.
Layers of protection include making sure your child has taken swimming lessons so they can swim and having kids supervised by a parent or other adult while they’re in the water.
