Injuries increase after Memorial Day, Norton’s Children Hospital shares safety tips

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a higher time for injuries among children. On average between 2019 and 2021, there were 4,056 UI deaths each year among children ages 0 to 14 years in the U.S.

According to Norton’s Children Hospital, Memorial Day kicks off trauma season. This is also known as the 100 deadliest days of summer. Not going the extra mile to protect your child could lead to many dangerous circumstances.

We spoke with Dr. Kelly Kries, pediatric physician with Norton Children’s Medical Group – Bowling Green, and learned why this happens.

Kries says, “The reason why we see a disproportionate increase in injuries at this time is because we’re doing a lot of fun activities that, unfortunately, have a little bit of a higher risk as well.”

The risk doesn’t always stop at injuries that you can see – the damage can impact an entire family.
