BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky University police say a man is facing charges after crashing into a utility pole on campus, causing his vehicle to catch fire.

According to a uniform citation, WKU police responded to 499 University Boulevard on Friday for a hit-and-run collision.

Police say witnesses stated Wade Mason Tate, 26, of Bowling Green allegedly struck a pole and caused his vehicle to catch fire after crossing four lanes of oncoming and almost hitting multiple vehicles.

According to police, multiple witnesses stated they were on the grass or sidewalk nearby during the incident.

WKU police say Tate’s behavior indicated he was intoxicated.

Police say when asked about why he was driving all over the road, Tate said he was mad that he was charged for someone else’s order at Burger King.

Tate was transported to The Medical Center at Bowling Green for medical clearance and blood draws and later taken to the Warren County Detention Center.

He is charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, first offense, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree wanton endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident – failure to render aid or assistance, resisting arrest and second-degree fleeing or evading police (on foot).
