Morgantown moving forward with downtown Pocket Park project

MORGANTOWN, Ky. – After several years of planning, the City of Morgantown is moving forward with a project to transform a vacant downtown corner into a new public park.

The proposed “pocket park” will be located across from the Butler County Courthouse and just down the street from Morgantown City Hall.

Plans for the site date back to 2020, when the final building on the property was demolished. City leaders say the project is part of an ongoing effort to beautify downtown and create more public gathering spaces for residents and visitors.

According to Morgantown City Clerk, Allie Lee, the park is expected to include several features designed to make the space both attractive and functional.

“The mayor loves the idea of having a fountain that people can see as they come through downtown,” Lee said. “We’re also planning for a memorial wall, benches, green space and trees. We would love to see a mural added as well because there’s a lot of history tied to this area.”

Officials say the park is intended to provide a welcoming space where people can relax, enjoy lunch and spend time downtown while preserving the character of the community.

While demolition work is still ongoing, construction on the park is expected to begin within the next few weeks. City leaders hope to have the project completed before the holiday season in November.
