Knox County couple strikes it big with a Kentucky Lottery ticket

KNOX COUNTY, Ky. – A regular, unsuspecting treat turned into a $125,000 surprise for one Knox County resident. For this resident, buying a Kentucky lottery ticket was just a fun treat after a day of confusion.
The anonymous winner’s day started with a very different attitude, one of mainly confusion. Her day began with a mix-up for a car appointment, which she had shown up for the wrong day for; she had decided to make use of the trip out of their house.
The anonymous winner took an unsuspecting grocery shopping trip at the Barbourville Walmart with her husband. After completing their grocery shopping trip, the anonymous winner’s husband decided to stop by the Kentucky Lottery vending machine just outside the doors.
One ticket that caught his eye was the $5 Queen of Hearts, so he grabbed two for himself and his wife. The Queen of Hearts tickets launched in the Kentucky Lottery in the middle of May. Unsuspecting the tickets to be winners, she scratched the tickets and saw a red heart.
“I saw the red heart and thought, ‘Wait… I need to read the instructions again.’ Then I scratched the amount, and I started freaking out. I said, ‘There’s no way. This is not real life.’”
Pulling off into a parking lot on their way home, her husband checked the ticket to make sure he was seeing this right.
After checking the Kentucky Lottery mobile app on his phone, it was true that she had just won the $125,00 ticket. After taxes were taken out, the anonymous winner won $90,625. Her family was on a lucky streak that day as her mother had won $100 from a lottery ticket that same day.
With excitement, she called her mom to tell her the news, but got sent to voicemail.
“I was like ‘I have life-changing news, and you’re not answering me,” she joked. “But she finally called back and was so excited for me.”
With this prize, the Knox County resident will spend the money towards a house and two new cars for her family.
Walmart in Barbourville sold the winning ticket and will receive $1,250.
