Man charged after allegedly causing fire at Bowling Green hotel, jumping from window

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A man is facing several charges after allegedly causing a fire within a Warren County hotel room.

In a uniform citation, the Bowling Green Police Department states officer responded shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday to Microtel at 1980 Mel Browning Road.

Police state an employee advised them a man had jumped out of the third-floor window before he reentered the hotel, broke a glass panel of the front desk, and chased the employee.

The suspect was identified as Derric Young. According to the citation, police held Young at gunpoint and gave verbal commands to stop and go to the ground.

Young was detained and treated by EMS on scene before being transported to the Medical Center at Bowling Green for clearance.

Police state the damage to the hotel is estimated to be over $1,000.

The uniform citation states police viewed surveillance of a towel on fire being tossed into the hallway from the room where Young was listed as staying, which was put out by another guest. Police say damage was observed on the other side of the door, as well as the mattress and smoke damage to the walls.

Police state Young later told them he intentionally stated the fire.

Young was transported to the Warren County Detention Center and faces charges of first-degree arson, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree promoting contraband, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense (methamphetamine), public intoxication  – controlled substance, second-degree disorderly conduct and menacing.
