‘The Thunderbirds Exhibit’ now open at the Aviation Heritage Park and Museum

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The grand opening of a new exhibit at the Aviation Heritage Park and Museum took place Saturday, March 30.

It’s themed after he Thunderbirds, specifically the 1977-78 team.

The Thunderbirds are the United States Air Force’s demonstration team, and two members of that specific team are from Bowling Green.

One of them, Matt Byrd, flew a plan over the city to celebrate the occasion.

News 40 was able to speak to another, who didn’t live here much growing up but knew he wanted to come back after retiring from service.

Dan Cherry, former brigadier general of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, says, “It was a blessing to come back. I love retirement, and I love participating in things like this. It’s a great way to give back to the community. I think all the work that’s been done here is really a testimony to the tradition of giving back.”

The Thunderbirds Exhibit is officially open at the Aviation Heritage Park and Museum, so stop by if you want to learn a little more about this historic team.
