Trends point to some shopping late for Valentine’s Day

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – According to the Associated Press, Valentine’s Day is a last minute affair for most Americans.

News 40 took to the streets to ask some people who might be able to attest to AP and as they tell it, the idea seems pretty realistic. According to the article, Walmart and Kroger see 70 and 80% of their profits for the week on Feb. 13 and 14. Morris Jeweler and Mary Jane’s Chocolates say they can back it up.

Both local businesses say business is pretty high every year, and it’s typically men who are browsing the market.

Jim Sears from Morris Jeweler described what one of these situations usually look like, which might include someone saying, “I’ve got to get something, it’s Valentines Day today, and I’m meeting her for dinner at 7 p.m.”

Gary Meszaros of Mary Jane’s Chocolates said the day before and the day of Valentine’s Day are the two busiest days of the year for them.

“We were overwhelmed yesterday,” Meszaros said on Valentine’s Day. He said he thinks the business had its second highest sales in 14 years.

News 40 also ran into a shopper who just picked up some flowers for his date this evening. He said a driving force could be that things are cheaper the day of and even the day after.
