Firearm safety to prevent future accidents
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The 2023 Coroner’s report was released this week, and among the numbers was one that was interesting because it was low.
Last year, there was only one fatal accidental gunshot wound. This, says Department of Fish and Wildlife public information officer Cody Fox, was one too many.
“All of these accidents are definitely preventable when properly storing your firearms in your ammunition, keeping them pointing in a safe direction. It’s almost, you know, all the time it’s because of negligence and doing the safe and proper thing can prevent all of all of these accidents,” Fox said.
Fox highly recommends that gun owners take the proper steps to secure firearms in the home. This includes gun safes, gun locks, understanding safeties and educating children about the dangers presented by firearms.
Fox also recommends that anyone who wants to learn more about firearms and firearm safety to enroll in a hunter’s safety course administrated by the DFW as a huge portion of the class is about proper handling and safety with firearms.
